Can A 10 Day Detox Program Form Part Of An Effective Health Regimen?
10 day detox programs have become extremely fashionable, now that the mass media have latched on to detoxification in a big way. The problem is that so much of this media knows it has to pander to the desires of the readership, even if those desires are totally unrealistic. Everyone, it seems, wants to lose weight. It has become one of the most popular subjects in conversation, and in all aspects of the media. Weight loss, however, is something which should never even be a goal in the first place. It should merely be a byproduct of the quest for better and sustainable health.
This is not to say that a 10 day detox program cannot play an effective role in the overall picture, but to claim that wondrous things can be achieved in such a time frame is irresponsible. It is also regrettable that programs are always presented as though they are safe for everybody to use, and that they will work for everybody. This is simply not the case, as there can never be a one size fits all solution for something as individualized as the human body.
What is needed is an overall strategy to improve bodily health, which is flexible enough to accommodate the needs of everyone no matter what stage they are at, which may or may not include short term components such as a 10 day detox. Although most 10 day detox programs are not as severe as the weekend and seven day programs, they are still too advanced to be attempted by people who are overweight and in fundamentally poor health. These people need a calmer and more patient approach.
It is the liver which is the key organ in the body's eliminatory system. It processes the toxins which are to be expelled, and if it is not functioning at optimum level, toxins are retained by the body and dealt with in the best way possible. This often means the creation of a bloated body, or of cellulite appearing. The goal is not to remove these unsightly features, but to return the body to health so that the excretory system can function properly again. This needs a longer term approach than a 10 day detox.
Start by cutting out all harmful substances such as alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine, and then look to replace heavy refined foods with something healthier. This will allow the liver to stop struggling under too great a load. Incorporating short fasts into the program will help to stimulate the liver back to life and begin the process of normal elimination. As you move along, you can start to introduce more extreme methods of cleansing, now that your system can cope with it. This could certainly include a system for a 10 day detox.
